How about that for a transition? The Republican Party’s first-ever midterm convention is underway in Dallas this morning. President Trump is set to take center stage tonight as Republicans try to build momentum ahead of the November elections. Joining us now with reaction is political strategist Gene Valentino. Gene, good morning to you.
Look, here’s the thing: Republicans are going to do a lot of rah-rah in the next couple of days, but they have got to address the elephant—or in this case, maybe the elephants, plural—in the room, which is some of what’s going on in the economy, from gas prices to groceries, etc. They can’t ignore it, and I’m wondering to see what that spin is going to look like tonight.

Well, thanks for having me. And David, I did see the Northern Lights up in Calgary, but I will enjoy the Southern Lights tonight in Texas because this will be a transformation. It will look like a… I’ll call it more than a patch on the tire—I will call it the re-energization of the Republican Party amidst a backdrop of a failing Democrat Party who can’t figure out who they are right now. I think they’re going to come away with key messaging. The distinction is that the Republican Party is standing on policies and principles and getting away from this tit-for-tat, rancorous diatribe of commentary to hurt the opponent. They’re dealing with facts; they’re dealing with solutions.

Gene, it’s hard enough to get people to go out in a major presidential election and vote. How can we get more people to come out for a midterm election? Does that messaging need to come across in the next two days? Because it’s not only the people there and the people listening, but it’s one friend to another to another friend.

Yeah, excellent question. You know, I’m here in Florida, and I did a lot of political strategizing for my campaign and other campaigns. The answer is motivation—turning the switch on that lights them up. Doing what Donald Trump said: “too big to rig.” Certainly, too big to rig, but getting a wave of people to the polls to vote is essential.
But my concern is they’ve got to be going to the polls thinking their vote counts. So once we maintain the Republicans in the House and once we maintain the Republicans in the Senate with a Republican president, there’s no excuse. They need to get going right away with a constitutional amendment, if necessary, to get that SAVE Act through to protect voter integrity, and eliminate and prosecute election fraud, which still exists in the blue areas of this nation.

Gene, two words I’ve heard you use repeatedly are motivation and messaging—motivating voters to get out there and vote in November and making sure that the message is solid and something that your regular, average-day voter can digest. But I’m curious how much of these next couple of days is also about uniting the party—unity, bringing the America First crowd with the MAGA crowd, and making sure that as we move towards November, the party is unified as one.

Yeah, and I submit, to add an exclamation mark to your point, Terence, that unification is more important than trying to quibble over $4 a gallon versus $3 a gallon at this moment. We have a lot of dynamics in place in the economy that Donald Trump’s hero, Scott Bessent, Secretary of the Treasury, is magnificently handling on a whole new front within the United States.
But guys, we need a unification in the Republican Party, which Donald Trump is talking about. It’s the underpinnings when he says “too big to rig.” Yeah, it is going to be too big to rig again like it was before, but we need to then fix the election process, which has its flaws.

Gene, here’s the thing: elections are won at the margins. You’ve got Tucker Carlson, MTG, Thomas Massie, and a lot of, quite frankly, the America First crowd in terms of that wing of MAGA that’s not happy—whether it be about the Iran war, about Epstein, or that Trump has gone off the reservation on a few issues that could make a difference in these midterms coming up because there’s going to be razor-sharp close races—21 in the House, for your take.

We’re spoiled! We forgot the hard labors of blood, sweat, and tears our forefathers gave to this nation. They wish all they had to worry about was a price per gallon or a slightly inflated power bill.
We are in a transition. Look at what’s going on right now just with the tariffs alone and our dear friends to the north in Canada. We have some people whose noses got a little bloody. Do you know why? They took advantage of America for decades, and now we’re standing up for the first time in history—in a long time at least, certainly since World War II. And we’re defending our principles and our standards. Lead, follow, or get the hell out of the way! We’ve got a nation to save, and we can’t be worrying about a few people who are just discomforted a little.
Look, my price per gallon is over $4 a gallon, too. So, you know, we’re suffering, but I know we don’t have war bonds. I know we’re dealing with it in a whole different plateau of issues related to tariffs and manipulation of the economy that our adversaries are going to have to deal with if they expect to deal with America. But to your point, we are a nation that has to get a little bit rougher and tougher, get off the couch, and stop being wimpy and so soft.
Yeah, we’ve got some hardship ahead of us, and I hope they bring it out in the convention in Dallas today. But you know, the tough get tougher, and we’re going to have to toughen up a little. Go to boot camp and see how they treat you—you’ll see what it takes to be a leader and a fighter for this nation.
