Uh Whitley, what do you make of the FCC taking this up? And is this something that they should be doing?

I absolutely think it’s something that they should be doing. I’m the mother of an 11year-old and I think that parents want transparency and not surprises.

We’ve already given parents guidance on whether things have adult language,

adult sexual issues, violence, etc. And so letting them know if there are going to be some complex things when it comes

to gender ideology, and especially some of these trans topics, it’s not about targeting or labeling people. It’s

honestly about giving parents the ability to have clarity on complex topics that they want exposed to their children.

I do. you know, internationally around the world, we don’t see that kind of labeling going on. Uh there’s no strong

international precedent for labeling gender gender identity as its own warning category. Uh in in programming,

most democracies have settled on let’s just inform the parents about content type, not content identity. You know,

Whitley, a lot of this uh the FCC regulates the broadcast uh networks, uh the cable uh shows, if you will, but

there’s a lot of over-the-top programming that’s happening, a lot of streaming services, Netflix being one of the biggest ones that don’t have to

abide by these guidelines. Uh how how do we get all of the streaming services and and whatnot to help notify parents of

what’s in these shows? Because I’ve done it. I’ve I’ve streamed some shows with my boys not knowing what the content was going to be and then was thrown for a loop.

Yeah, that is a big issue. And you also have to remember back when the FCC was created and we were looking at ways to

add these types of tags and moderations on things, we hadn’t developed streaming. We were still going to Blockbuster. And so now that we have all of these streaming platforms, there

needs to be a way to not only alert parents, but to alert people about the type of content that they may see,

especially when some of the content looks like it could be for children, but it’s actually for adults. And so finding ways that we are able to label the types

of content. I think this should also extend to YouTube as well.

producer of of of shows saying that Netflix requires uh there be a trans student or a trans character um in in

the programming that it picks up that there’s quotas for this type of thing.

Yeah. While we have less control over what a producer produces and what a network provider like uh Netflix would

would deliver, uh you know, we’ve got to be careful that uh we stay focused on

not um polarizing the way this is going by the labeling process. Uh, I think I

think it’s gotten to a point where contentbased labeling, okay, but uh be careful with identitybased labeling. So,

you know, I’d like to know if it’s an R or X uh show if my son or daughter is in the room watching it with me. But the uh

specifics of sexual preference um could be could be generally uh labeled as a

category. But I don’t need to know anything else about it for purposes of what I want my children to see. The rest

of the world seems to go along in democratized areas. This the rest of the world goes along with the same criteria.

You know, Whitley Jean brings up a good point. If you’re going to start, you know, moderating some content, then

where does that stop? Is it gender identity? Is it sexual themes? Is it violence? Is it gore? The whole rating

system. I mean, it could lead to censorship.

I definitely would understand why someone would say that. And I think the point is we’re not labeling people’s identity. We’re labeling themes that

could be present. And it allows for parents to be able to choose the type of complex ideas that their children are

exposed to. Now, if you are attempting to label identities of people and warn people about specific identities, I do think it toes the line of censorship.

But if you are just allowing people to know the type of content that’s being produced and the themes that will be associated with that content, I think that that’s fair game.
