April 5, 2008 – When Escambia County residents hear the name “Patti,” they think of Joe Patti Seafood, Pensacola’s historical landmark on the bayfront since 1931. Over the past 30 years, Patti Shipyard, Inc. on Bayou Chico, has quietly positioned itself as the nation’s premier steel vessel builder. During that time, Patti Shipyard has built more vessels for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers than anyone. They also received two “Department of Defense – Patriotic Civilian Service” awards for their high level of workmanship and end value to the government. Their commercial efforts included the first and largest inland gambling vessel in the country, as well as the highest bollard tugboat in the Gulf of Mexico. Beyond the immediate economic impact their 60-employee base provides, there are numerous second-tier local subcontractors and vendors that rely heavily on the steady flow of work that originates from their contracts.
